Two wartime poets expressed disillusionment; two composers spun their poems into evocative musical scores. Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Principal Violist Zhenwei Shi stands in for Childe Harold in Berlioz's picturesque Harold in Italy. Robert Spano presents the "fearless" piano virtuoso Conrad Tao in Bernstein's plaintive and sassy symphony "The Age of Anxiety," inspired by W.H. Auden's Pulitzer Prize-winning poem.

Russian violinist Alina Ibragimova turns her fiery bow on Mozart's "Turkish" Concerto, so named for the composer's take on Turkish melodies. "Ibragimova has technique to burn," wrote Audiophilia. Guest conductor Jörg Widmann offers a lively opener with his own composition Con brio, "with spirit."

On the second half, Maestro Stutzmann piles on the pathos, drawing on the phenomenal expressive range of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to deliver Tchaikovsky's impassioned Pathétique Symphony.
